Early Resident of Nebraska is Stricken Monday
Johann Gerhard Meyer Dies at Home in Uehling
Johann Gerhard Meyer, who died Monday afternoon at Uehling, was an
early Nebraska resident, coming to Omaha in May, 1868, in company
with 20 other Germany immigrants. From Omaha the group drove a team
to the farm of Gerhard Monnich near Hooper. Mr. Meyer took a
homestead in that vicinity which he later sold, re-investing the
money in land.
Funeral services in charge of Wollmer and Warne of Hooper will be
held Thursday afternoon with Rev. Mr. Rhode officiating. Short
services will be held at the home in Uehling at 1 o'clock followed
by services at 2 o'clock at St. Paul's church north of Hooper.
Burial will be made in the church cemetery.
Johann Gerhard Meyer was born in Hatter-Wusting, Grand Duchy of
Oldenburg, Germany, September 1, 1846. As a youth he worked as an
interior decorator in Holland to earn money for a passage to
America.
His marriage to Maria Stover took place June 9, 1874. She and 10
children, 27 grandchildren and three great grandchildren survive.
Preceding him in death were a son who died in infancy and a
daughter, the late Mrs. Joe Marsh, of Colome, S.D.
Children still living are Mrs. Charles Henneman, Springview, Neb.;
Herman F. Meyer, Scribner; Mrs. William Henneman, Milboro, S.D.;
Bernard Meyer, Uehling; Mrs. Lars Jorgensen, Uehling; Mrs. Hans
Jorgensen, Colome, S.D.; Miss Kate Meyer, Akron, Colo.; John G.
Meyer, Uehling; Mrs. Gustav Wurdeman, Omaha, and Mrs. Henry Dicke,
Wauneta. |
