Claus Menke, retired, Potters Mills. Born in Grand Duchy of Oldenburg,Germany, July 2, 1819. He came to America in 1848, and came at once toMilwaukee, Wis. From there he went to Cedarburg, then to the town of Herman,Sheboygan Co., then to Two Rivers, finally returning to his farm in SheboyganCounty, where he remained till 1853, when he went to Franklin and built abrewery. In 1857, he went into a brewery in Menasha, and also kept tavern. In1858, he returned to Franklin, and was appointed keeper of a toll-gate on theCalumet & Sheboygan plank road. He was till 1866, when he came here. In 1875,he was elected County Treasurer. He now holds the office of Town Clerk; wasTown Treasurer from 1867 to 1875. In 1846, he married Miss Peterman. They hadnine children, only three of whom are living - Margaret (now Mrs. Ludtke),August and Amiel. |
