Ahlering, Hermann H. (Obituary, in: Der deutsche Pionier (Cincinnati), Jg. 6, S. 151 ):
A member of the Pionier Verein. On Saturday, 9 May [1874] at 5:30 a.m. a boy walking along the canal near Eighth Street [in Cincinnati] discovered a body in the water. He ran to the nearby coopering shop and notified the owner who called the police who recovered the body from the water. The body was identified as that of Hermann H. Ahlering.
Herr Ahlering was born on 29 Mar 1812 in Goldenstaedt, Oldenburg, and emigrated on 6 Aug 1838 via Bremen to America. He landed on 20 Oct 1838 in Baltimore and came directly to Cincinnati, arriving on 15 Nov 1838. Through his industry and frugality he became well-to-do. At first he was in the clothing business of his brother and later became a partner of Herr J. B. BRUMMER in a similar business, remaining therein until his death. He was unmarried and boarded with his siblings. He was an orderly and just man, and all who knew him agree that he ist unlikely to have committed suicide and likely to have died accidentally. In his will he left considerable sums of money to several Catholic churches and institutions, among which the German Catholic orphanage was the main recipient.
