Stelle: killed by John Brady in a gunfight |
- I am aware that my Grandfather was killed by a John Brady, in a gunfight at the cafe my grandfather owned. Brady had been a policeman in Cincinnati, was let go from the police force for unspecified reasons, then reputedly became an enforcer for a protection racket in Cincinnati. Brady and my Grandfather had argumed the previous night at the Cafe, presumably over money, and then Brady returned the next day and had the mortal encounter the next day. My Grandfather must have had quite a temper, another family story about him was that he had been drafted into the German Army for the first World War, got into a argument with an officer, fought with the officer and was thrown into the military jail. His family (brothers) got him out of jail somehow, and bought a passage for him to the USA. initially to New Orleans and on a Riverboat to Cincinnati where the US authorities would not be looking for him and some of his mother's (Lampings) family lived that could help him adjust to life in the USA. So, I estimated some of his Meerpohl brothers or some of his Mother's family, Lampings may recall the real story on how, when and why Anthony (Anton) Meerpohl came to America in the years of 1913-14-15.
Breast-to-breast, Anthony Meerpohl, saloonkeeper, and John Brady, former city Patrolman, fougt a pistol battle in Meerpohl's saloon an both men are dying. (bis hier auch in: Rockingham post-dispatch, 15 Sep 1921). The fight, according to the police, was the result of a free for all battle in the saloon last night.
Meerpohl charges that Brady was the leader of last night's trouble and he had ordered him to stay away from the place. When the sallon keeper opened his place today Brady walked in and the shooting began. (The Democratic banner, Mt. Vernon, 9 Sep 1921 u.a.)
