AGED COUPLE FOUND DEAD
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Henke Killed by Lightning at Their Home Northeast of Pickrell
One of the most peculiar accidents ever occurring in this section of the state took place yesterday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Obering, who live six miles northeast of Pickrell, which resulted in the death of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Henke, parents of Mrs. Obering, who were both found dead in bed.
When Mr. Obering arose yesterday morning about 4 o'clock he discovered that Mr. Henke was not up and about the house as was his usual custom at that hour in the morning. As he was obligedto go through their chamber to reach the kitchen, he concluded to call Mr. Henke. In doing so he received no response, and in going to the bed he was startled to find the aged couple both cold in death.
Mr. Obering was at a loss to know what caused their death, but upon examining the telephone, which was not more than two or three feet from the bed in which the aged couple lay he discovered that a bold of lightning had torn of the top of the instrument and melted metal, besides burning out the carbon. It was his belief after taking a survey of the surroundings taht the couple was killed by an electric current transmitted by the phone.
Naturally the family was greatly excited when the bodies were found, and Mr. Obering lost no time in notifying Coroner Walden who, in company with Constable Leary, drove to the Obering farm, leaving here about 1 o'clock.
Reaching the Obering house about 3:30 o'clock the coroner, after investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the aged couple, decided not to hold an inquest as he was the opinion that an electric current had caused the death of Mr. and Mrs. Henke. On the right side of Mr. Henke's face the coroner found a spot about the size of a half a dollar, which looked as though the flesh had been burned. No other marks were found on either of the bodies. Death must have been instantaneous. Coroner Walden believes that after the current passed through Mr. Henke's body it was communicated by him to his wife who lay close by his side, causing her death. The phone is on a farmer's private line, and it is thought faulty construction had much to do with causing the accident.
Mr. Henke was 76 years of age and Mrs. Henke 70. They were among the prominent German families of Gage county and had lived with Mr. and Mrs. Obering for a long time.
The funeral will be held today from the Hanover church, and the bodies will be interred in Hanover cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Obering have the sympathy of the entire community in their affliction.
Coroner Walden and Constable Leary reached home last evening shortly after 7 o'clock.
The fatal accident will go down in history as being a most remarkable and peculiar one.
