John Hatke Sr. Dead
Saturday morning at, 8:20 John Hatke, one of the township's oldest citizens died at Home north of the city after an illness of one week with pneumonia. The deceased was a useful and respected citizen of the communi ty and will be mourned by his many friends, He was one of the pioneers of this community and it is to men of his type, that the generations of today owe our prosperous conditions. They felled the forest and made the prairies bloom.
John Hatke was born at Oldenburg, on April 8, 1830. In 1844 he came to this country via New Orleans to St Louis at which place they were compelled to stay seven weeks on account of the high water. He settled at once on a farm several miles north of Teutopolis and lived there the balance of his life until his death last Saturday. Fifty-three years ago he was united in marriage with Bernadina Dependener and to this union nine chi ldren were born, eight of whom are living as follows: Henry of Idaho, Barney of Watson, Canada, Mrs Philomina Hille, Chicago, Mrs Kate Rieman, Mrs Anna Behrman, Mrs Mary Pundsack, Frank and Herman. All are married except Herman who resided at Home with him and conducted the farm. Besides the children the wife survives him.
The funeral took place from the Catholic Church Monday morning and the remains were followed to their last resting place by a large number of sorrowing relatives and friends.
