(From Effingham Record)
THEO. HOFFMAN LAID TO REST
Tuesday morning at St Anthony Church, the last of the series of obsequies over the bodies of the Effingham boys killed in action in France during the close of the World War was held. It was for Theodore Hoffman of this city and township, an Effingham boy, and a mammoth congregation assembled to pay a heartfelt tribute to the boy who because of his clean, up-right life was so much in their affections. Ted was an intelligent, light-hearted boy who made friends of every one who came within the influence of his jovial disposition. When we got the news, during the last days of the fighting that Ted Hoffman was among the killed our community was thrown into a deep sorrow. It was a great grief to us to think that this promisi ng boy had to give his life on the last day but one of the fighting. But he had fallen on the field where 129 years ago thousands of other French and German boys had to give up their lives in Argonne because some competing monarchs chose the sword to settle a matter that could have been settled by arbitration.
The comrades of Hoffman in regulation khaki were present to the number of a hundred or more and acted as a general funeral escort and as pall bearers. It looked like the war days to see them in line l ed by the color bearer with Old Glory floating
over them. With those boys and that flag we felt secure during the war. We glorify both of them now.
Solemn Requiem Mass at St Anthony's, was celebrated for the dead soldier, the deep, deathly silence of the congregation having added to the solemnity of the mass. Father Lambert was the celebrant, Father Hoffman deac on and Father Nell sub-deacon. Father
Lambert made a very appropriate address for the occasion, the congregation having given exceptional attention to its delivery. The funeral cortege then proceeded to St Anthony Cemetery where the military feature followed the Church rites. The volley fire over the grave and the taps buglers were Eugene Craig and Claude Green were the soldiers last tattoo. Craig was the first bugler and Green gave the echoic response. Like the Willis funeral taps constitutes one of t he one of the sweetest as well as one of the most pathetic features. they tugged at the the heart strings until your very being clogged with emotion. In the whole realm of music there is nothing encompasses and captures the citadel of the soul so completely as taps when given as the last human note in the military rites over a companion.
