Henry Schmietenknop. Widely known as a prosperous agriculturist of Everett Township, Henry Schmietenknop is numbered among the citizens of high repute in Dodge County, where he has lived for upwards of a quarter of a century. He was born March 25, 1876, in Germany, the lifelong residence of his parents, Gerhard and Anna (Miners) Schmietenknop, who were industrious, hard-working farmers.
Bred and educated in his native country, Henry Schmietenknop determined as a boy to find out, as soon as old enough, the truth regarding the wonderful stories of America's prosperity, and in 1893 left home and friends to come to the United States. Making his way to Nebraska, he located in Dodge County, and for a time worked for John Heithausen. Becoming familiar with agricultural pursuits, he engaged in farming on his own account, and met with such encouraging results that, in 1900, he rented the farm which he still farms, it being on section 12, Everett Township. In 1911 he purchased a farm of 225 acres in Hooper and Everett townships which he rents out. Laboring industriously and intelligently, Mr. Schmietenknop has carried on general farming and stock raising most successfully, his land being well cultivated and well improved, while his farming implements and machinery are all that can be desired by the up-to-date agriculturist. Interested in everything pertaining to the management of a farm, he is an active member of the Farmers' Union at Hooper. August 4, 1898, Mr. Schmietenknop was united in marriage with Anna Osterloh, who was born in
Dodge County, Nebraska, of German lineage. Her father Gerhard Osterloh, was born in Germany, October 31, 1838, and there lived until after his marriage with Gesine Egbers. Coming with his family to Dodge County, Nebraska, in 1868, he homesteaded, and was thereafter prosperously engaged in general farming and stock raising and feeding until his death, in 1894. He was independent in politics, and an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, to which his widow belongs.
Three children have blessed the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Schmietenknop, namely : George, Clara and Fred. An independent voter, Mr. Schmietenknop casts his ballot in favor of the men and measures he deems best. Both he and his wife are valued members of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and are rearing their family in the Lutheran faith.
