Miss Meta Harms Dies at Age of 75; Taught at Packer
German Teacher Served Institute for 35 Years and Won High Praise
Miss Meta Harms, 75, teacher of German in Packer Collegiate Institute for 35 Years, and head of the German department of the school when she retired in 1929, dies Yesterday morning at the Methodist Episcopal Hospital after a short illness following a heart attack. [...]
Miss harms was born in Griebel, Germany, and came to this country in 1877. She was a private teacher before she joined the Packer faculty, where she saw her classes increase each year until there were four teachers in the German department.
Miss Harms used original methods in her teaching, aiming to bring to her students the entire picture of the cultural life of Germany, and made the language a key to unlock its riches. Asked once why she had remained in this country so long without returning to her native land she replied: "I loved my teaching, I wouldn't have stayed if I hadn't. O one should teach who doesn't love it. [...]"
