Ahlering, John F. (Obituary in: Der deutsche Pionier (Cincinnati), Jg. 6, S. 414):
A founder of the Pionier Verein and respected citizen of Cincinnati. He was born on 10 Feb. 1816 in Goldenstedt, Amt Vechte [Vechta], Oldenburg. He emigrated on 15 Apr 1836 via Bremen to America, arriving at Baltimore on 26 May 1836 as a twenty-year-old in order to avoid military service [in Germany]. Ahlering then walked from Baltimore to Pittsburgh and then took a steamboat to Cincinnati, arriving on 10 Jun [1836]. He had learned the tailoring craft and established a shop here. Some years later, in partnership with J B. BRUMMER, he had a clothing store which, at the time of his death, was located on Main Steet between Fifth and Sixth streets. Ahlering was one of the main supporters of the German Catholic Orphan Verein, of which he was administrator for a number of years. He died on 28 Dec 1874 [No surviving family members mentioned]. |
